At Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern, we strongly believe in promoting from within. 75% of our current managers started their careers in management as hourly associates. Promotions are chosen based on their involvement in our Future Leader Program which teaches them understanding of our overall operations, leadership skills and the ability to say ‘the answer is yes, what is the question?'.
The future leader program is designed to allow our associates time to develop. The length of the development is intended to assist associates with little or no previous management experience the time to learn and gain the necessary tools to be successful in their next role as a manager. Each associate will continue to work their hourly position while training to be a future leader.
During their time as an hourly associate they will continue to develop themselves through working with their management team. The management team in their restaurant will act as the Future Leader mentor by training them in the skills necessary to manage people and a business.
The Future Leader Program is a very unique benefit to many associates interested in growing in this industry. Traditionally, their time spent as a future leader is very self driven and the length of time to develop into a manager could run between 3 months to one year to complete.

Here at the Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern, we have a very strong sense of family. We empower and believe in our associates to always do the right thing, and in turn believe in promoting from within. 75% of our managers were at one time associates; either working as line cooks, greeting at the front door, or serving great food to our guests. The following stories illustrate how we nurture our associates’ growth at The Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern (RBT).
Steve Slack is a great example of a valued associate who is now a manager in our company. Steve came to us in 2006 and opened our West Bloomfield, MI location as a Server. Steve lead by example in his store and worked his way into a supervisor position and quickly into our Future Leader Program. When we opened our new Northville, MI location, Steve was the natural choice to become the Assistant Kitchen Manager (AKM). In September 2009 when we opened our Indianapolis location, Steve was an integral team member managing both the Front and Heart of the House. Steve showed great leadership skills and was a great example of our culture. In 2011 Steve continued his versatile leadership skills and opened our Bloomfield Hills, MI store as an AKM and Dining Room Manager. Steve’s commitment to excellence and the success of our company made him the obvious choice to fill the position of General Manager of our Northville, MI location in 2012. Steve continues to make Raving Fans every day in Northville, MI, and we are excited to see great things from Steve in the near future!
Another success story is that of Bill Everett who was most recently promoted to Regional Director, overseeing five Rusty Bucket locations. Bill had worked for our sister company Cameron Mitchell Restaurants throughout his college career. His love for the culture of our companies brought him to RBT in 2005 when he opened our 5th property in Dayton, OH as a bartender and supervisor. His hard work ethic provided him with the opportunity to become a Lead Trainer and assist in the openings of seven Rusty Bucket’s across three states. Soon thereafter his strong sense of hospitality provided him with a management position in our Worthington, OH location. After managing in the dining room for just one year, Bill’s display of strong leadership skills and sense of ownership earned him a promotion to General Manager of our Dublin, OH location. In 2012 Bill was chosen to be the opening General Manager of our Gahanna, OH location, where he remained until his 2013 promotion to Regional Director. Bill’s leadership now impacts many of our valued associates at multiple locations, and we are confident his influence will continue to be great!
The Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern is a "ProStart® Preferred Partner" for the Ohio Restaurant Association Education Foundation.
The ProStart® program was developed to increase the quality and employability of today's high school restaurant-management and culinary arts graduates by providing them with training related to important management and practical skills, as well as opportunities for career exploration and higher education. The ProStart® program includes an industry-driven curriculum to teach, test and award industry-recognized certificates to students meeting high standards in foodservice and restaurant education.
Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern has also committed to donating a total of $20,000 over the next four years to provide scholarships for future restaurant-management and culinary arts students.
